It’s a good question. What does gender have to do with it…? As a female I’ve lost count of how many times I’ve been told I’m over-sensitive or over-emotional or that I over-think things. Working in a male-dominated industry doesn’t help, and bad treatment comes from all sorts of places, funnily enough in my industry often from older females who have had to fight very hard to get to where they are but who - strangely - seem to have forgotten the mistreatment they got along the way. Everyone could just be a little bit kinder to each other. That can’t be too difficult can it? So gender does have a lot to do with it and sometimes in ways that are not what you’d expect. In my humble experience the female judges are often the worst offenders, literally and figuratively.

That can be very true. I think there is still this societal expectation that it is ok for a woman to cry but a man better not. And in some cases, this is a good stance. But in most, men are just emotionally unintelligent and isolate, leading to internalization of negative emotions that eventually externalize.

Men have terrible support systems for crying. Women are there for each other. Men aren’t. I think this is where the largest divide is.

I wish more men would express their feelings, not just to their partners but to their friends. I wish more men would cry. And hug each other and tell each other how much they love each other. Male suicide is an epidemic. 😔
